Scituate, MA, May 30, 2014—The WV TAP In-Home Tap Water Sampling Plan document and corrected Crude MCHM Oxidation Report language have been posted. These documents are now available for download under the “TEST RESULTS” tab.

WV TAP In-Home Tap Water Sampling Plan

The In-Home Tap Water Sampling Plan document has been a central focus of the entire WV TAP initiative. All WV TAP efforts completed to this point have helped obtain the necessary data to design the sampling plan including the WV TAP Health Effects Expert Panel, 10 Home Study, Tentatively Identified Compounds research, and Crude MCHM Odor and Oxidation efforts. The sampling plan was designed by incorporating statistically analyzed WV TAP tap water testing results.

The sampling plan was designed to answer three key questions:

1. What is the concentration of MCHM in people’s residences?
2. Is the average concentration observed in homes below a level of concern?
3. What proportion of the homes has MCHM concentrations below a level of concern?

Corrected Crude MCHM Oxidation Report Language

A revised WVTAP report entitled “Oxidation Studies with Crude 4-methylcyclohexanemethanol in Water” has been posted and the new file includes two minor changes. First, the name of the West Virginia state agency that approved the discharge of backwash water to the Elk River was corrected on page 2. Second, the timing of the use of powdered activated carbon at the Kanawha Valley Water Treatment Plant was clarified on page 3. None of the report conclusions were changed as a result of these adjustments.

However, during the MCHM contamination event, WVAW obtained permission from the West Virginia Bureau for Public Health to discharge the filter backwash water into the Elk River so that they the odorous compound would not be recycled back into the treatment plant.

However, during the MCHM contamination event, WVAW obtained permission from the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection to discharge the filter backwash water into the Elk River so that they the odorous compound would not be recycled back into the treatment plant.-

Original version:
PAC was not added in the treatment plant until after the licorice odor was detected.

Revised version:
PAC was added in the treatment plant beginning on January 9, which was the same day the licorice odor was detected in the air around the Elk River and the same day that Freedom Industries was confirmed as the source of the chemical spill.
